HOME WIND POWER SYSTEMS – wind turbine generators

Wind Turbines – Wind Generators

Wind power is one of the oldest forms renewable technologies. Wind turbines (generators) transform the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical power that can be directed into the homes electric system.

Wind turbine generator provides clean, renewable power for home owners and small business and many other uses.

WIND SYSTEMS

A wind turbine generator can generate enough power to meet most or all of your household electricity needs, providing the homeowner with a guarantee against future increases in the costs of power.

In fact, in some states it’s possible to sell excess electricity back to the power company an arrangement known as net metering. The long-term economic benefits can make the home wind power system quite cost effective.

A substantial investment at the beginning of your home wind system project, but you’ll save money on your power bill and potentially make money after you recouped your initial costs.

A home wind power system can be a great investment and a wonderful way to reduce emissions, save the environment and reduce your dependence on fossil fuels reducing your carbon footprint.

A wind turbine generator can supply sufficient amounts of electricity for a household to operate all the electrical appliances in peak period. The electricity generated is largely dependent on the available wind.

The homeowner when planning for wind power must consider the installation of a home wind system regarding whether there is a sufficient wind resource at the location?

How much wind?

Average of 9 to 10 miles per hour depending on your wind installation. A stand-alone system or a grid-connected system.

A grid-connected system establishes you and the local utility as partners in generating electricity.

If the wind turbine generator cannot deliver the amount of energy you need, the utility makes up the difference. When your wind system produces more electricity than the household requires, the excess can be sold to the power company.

Renewable Energy Query?

Can anybody tell me what the average output (in mW) is for horizontal and vertical axis wind turbines? I mean the large ones you see in the fields. If you could also tell me the wind speed that it usually takes to power either, that would be great too. Thanks!

Found this information from the referenced source:
“Generally speaking, utility-scale wind power projects using large turbines that service the electrical grid require an average wind speed of at least 7 meters per second (15.7 miles per hour) or average power of at least 400 Watts per square meter (NREL class 4). Small-scale turbines such as those used by farmers and homeowners are often used in locations with lower average annual wind speeds”

Typical large scale wind turbines put out 1.5MW at a 27-56mph wind.An interesting point was for the U.S. the actual output for large wind turbines was only 26.9% of what they are capable of producing due to wind availability.
